Ouranosaurus

Meet Ouranosaurus

  • Ouranosaurus is one of the very few duck-billed dinosaurs from Africa.

  • The name is derived from Arabic for “courage,” but also references the local name for the desert monitor lizard, ourane.

  • Ouranosaurus is easily recognized for the large sail on its back. Its body shape closely resembles other duck-billed dinosaurs.

  • Much like Spinosaurus (also from northern Africa), the sail is thought to have helped Ouranosaurus regulate its temperature.

  • Ouranosaurus likely moved around entirely on two legs.
