tapa cloth

Tapa cloth, Tonga, Pacific Islands. Cloth is in a rectilinear (checkerboard) design and contains both geometic patterns and other symbols such as crosses, leaves and stars. One edge of cloth was measured and numbered, while it was being made, which denotes that the cloth was at one time part of a larger whole. Cloth has minor holes and tears due to being hung for an extended period of time before donation.
