percussion instrument
West African talking drum, possibly from Nigeria. Hourglass shaped drum. Leather cords or thongs run the length of the drum and are wraped around both hoops; when you squeeze these cords the drum haed tightens, changing the instruments pitch. Drum has a carrying strap made of leather and burlap. Halfway around the circumference of each end of the drum, leather flaps with metal (brass?) bells have been attached. The letters GA have been stamped on the burlap sack portion of the carrying strap.
