
MASK
Large helmet mask/figure - Papua New Guinea. Made from woven plant fibers (basketry). Front of mask depicts two faces covered with mud and painted with white, black, gray and orange pigments. Attached to the jawline of the faces is a grass, which makes a beard. The upper face has earrings made of rings of plant fiber and cowrie shells. The body of the mask has been painted black. The top of the piece is covered with plant fibers that have been woven into a net. A hanging hook, made of plant fibers, is attached at the top. Grass fibers cover the base of the mask. Grass fibers are also attached around the back of the figure at the nose level of the lower face.
