CARVING

Yipwon figure made of carved wood in the form of a highly stylized human figure and has been painted black. The body of the figure is rendered as a series of large semi-symmetrical and opposed hook shapes with a large head and a single leg for the figure to rest on. Back of piece has "488" written in white chalk. Yipwon are war and hunting spirits, and as such seem to be related to most important dieties whom the Yimam call yimar, which means man or human being (Meyer, Anthony JP. Oceanic Art. 1995 Konnemon Verlagsgesellschaft mbH. pp. 235)
