Behind the Name
George Washington Carver (Date unknown,1860s–January 5, 1943) was an American agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted methods to prevent soil depletion and alternative crops to cotton. Carver faced many obstacles in his life—from being born into slavery to segregation—but he became the most prominent Black scientist of the early 20th century. Carver’s legacy is one of compassion and science coming together to make the world a better place.
