Science Museum of Minnesota uncovers the mysteries and complexities of skin in exhibit opening Oct. 3
St. Paul, Minn. — Prompting dialogue and exploration, the Science Museum of Minnesota will open a new temporary exhibit dedicated to the uniquely complex organ that protects humans and animals, illustrating the incredibly adaptive properties of skin across all organisms. Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity opens to the public on Friday, Oct. 3. Members of the media are invited to preview the exhibit on Thursday, Oct. 2 from 9-11 a.m., with interview opportunities with the museum’s chair of biology.
Uniquely personal yet universal, skin is the interface between organisms and their environments — and is our public face to the world. Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity invites viewers to explore the beauty and sophistication of this complex organ through rarely seen scientific specimens, fascinating interactive experiences, and thought-provoking investigations.
Skin features dozens of objects that showcase the impressive adaptive properties of skin in animals, including its ability to support and regenerate keratin-based structures like armored scales, aerodynamic feathers, and insulating fur.
In one case study, Skin explores one of conservation’s hardest challenges in the black rhinoceros. With its keratin horn, powerful hooves and thick hide, this herbivore’s skin adaptations help protect it from the harsh conditions and fierce predators of the African savannah, but not from its most threatening foe – human-driven habitat loss and poaching.
The exhibit goes further than skin deep, sparking dialogue and reflection about skin’s role in shaping human culture and identity. Investigate the layers of meaning humans have associated with skin color throughout history and how our social and political climate has influenced shifting ideas of race and culture in our modern world.
Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity is sponsored by HealthPartners and H.B Fuller Company Foundation.
