Biology Base Camp

Biology Base Camp is part of the new 10,000-square-foot Expedition Health gallery at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS). Biology Base Camp lab space is modeled after the Science Museum of Minnesota's Cell Lab. At Biology Base Camp, visitors will don lab coats, goggles, and gloves then choose from five different interactive wet-lab bench activities. Three of the activities, See Your CellsBattling Bacteria, and DNA Extraction are copies of activities from the Cell Lab but designed for the Biology Base Camp space. Two of the activities are newly developed by the Science Museum of Minnesota in close collaboration with DMNS. One activity, Drug Impacts, allows participants to test the effect of different drug compounds on the heart rate of a small freshwater invertebrate called Daphnia magna. Another newly developed activity, Food Nutrition, compares the sugar content of different cereals using a sugar refractometer which utilizes light to measure the amount of sugar in a solution.
